Dr Jason Gilliland speaks about food access on CBC’s “The National”

Monday, July 22, 2013

Millions of Canadians live in “food deserts”.  According to Dr Jason Gilliland of Western’s Geography Department, a food desert is a disadvantaged area of a community where residents do not have easy access to healthy, affordable food.  Dr Gilliland was recently interviewed on CBC TVs “The National” about the subject of food deserts and the potential benefits of “pop-up good food markets”.  These food programs have recently appeared in several Canadian cities as a means of bringing fresh food and produce to residents without a nearby grocery store.  [See video clip here:]
