Tuesday, October 29, 2013

HEAL Research Associate, Dr. Andrew Clark and co-investigator, Dr. Darren Scott of McMaster University, presented at the 7th Annual Sport Canada Research Initiative Conference in Ottawa, ON. His poster, "Comparing the Barriers Between Organized and Unorganized Sport Participation", examined barriers to sport for adults in Hamilton, Ontario.

Key Findings:

1. Time barriers prevent both organized and unorganized sport participation for workers and parents, but are not a barrier to adults under 30 and those who are unmarried.
2. Health barriers prevent both organized and unorganized sport participation for senior citizens and low income residents, but are not barriers to those who are unmarried, young, and employed.
3. Perceived accessibility to recreation facilities prevent transit users from participating in organized sport, but there no groups are negatively impacted by accessibility to facilities for unorganized sports.
