TTV Blog 3 – Hands on Experience by Aliana Manji

Hi! My name is Aliana Manji. I am a grade 12 student at SAB, and I am entering my third year on the YAC. Currently, we are working on the Teens Talk Vaping project. So far, we have had three sessions discussing our roles in the project, the type of research we are conducting and how the focus groups will work. I have already learned so much as our leaders, Drew, Kendra, and Steph, make sure that all our voices are heard and answer our continuous questions.

The topics we discuss are also very thought-provoking and generate excellent discussions. This project has also given me the ability to work with real, experienced researchers to learn more about research and get hands-on experience. It has been amazing that we have not let COVID-19 be a barrier in seeing this project through fruition by collaborating virtually.

The issue of teens and vaping has been our main focus on the HEALYAC since its creation. I have been extremely fortunate to have been involved in developing this topic since then and am excited to see how correct our vaping assumptions are. I have learned so much about conducting ethical research but haven’t had the chance to act on what I have learned. I am so excited to continue with this project and start the focus groups!  This has been an engaging learning opportunity and will help me a lot in my future endeavors.
