The HEAL would like to congratulate Emma Fabri who successfully defended her MSc thesis under the supervision of Dr. Jason Gilliland in August 2023.

Active and Safe Routes to School

Emma Fabri successfully defended her thesis titled Exploring Stakeholder Perspectives of Active School Travel Policies in Ontario. Emma completed her Master of Science in Geography and Environment under the supervision of Dr. Jason Gilliland. During her studies, Emma explored how policy change can promote Active School Travel (AST) and what barriers AST stakeholders face in enacting proposed policy changes.

Key informant interviews were conducted with AST stakeholders, including representatives from municipalities, school boards, student transportation services, public health units, the provincial government, police service, and a road safety non-profit organization. An inductive thematic analysis of interview transcripts uncovered themes relating to stakeholders’ perceptions of barriers to AST and policy change.

Findings provide practical implications for improving AST policies in Ontario.
