Lunch & Learn: Reuniting Accessibility Measures with Spatial Interaction Principles

HEAL kicked off its first Lunch & Learn of the 2025-26 academic year on October 7, featuring a presentation by Dr. Anastasia Soukhov (a new postdoc here at the HEAL) on her dissertation research, “Reuniting Accessibility Measures with Spatial Interaction Principles.”
The session explored a novel way of interpreting and calculating spatial accessibility (the potential for interaction with opportunities) by reconnecting it with spatial interaction models. Soukhov traced how accessibility measures have evolved and diverged from these theoretical roots until recently, and proposed a framework for a “family” of measures, and demonstrated their application through Toronto parkland case studies.
The presentation highlighted the relevance of accessibility metrics for land-use and transportation planning, offering a bridge between classic spatial interaction theory and contemporary planning practice.
