Lunch & Learn with Prof. Jamie Seabrook: Cannabis Hyperemesis Syndrome in Youth

On November 11, HEAL hosted Dr. Jamie Seabrook, a full professor in the Department of Epidemiology and Biostatistics at Western University and a faculty associate of the HEAL for a Lunch & Learn.
Professor Seabrook delivered an insightful presentation titled “Hot Showers, Cold Reality: Cannabis Hyperemesis Syndrome in Youth”. The talk synthesized a review of literature on cannabis hyperemesis syndrome (CHS), an understudied condition increasingly observed among youth.
CHS occurs in long-term, frequent cannabis users and is marked by cyclic episodes of severe nausea, vomiting, and abdominal pain, despite cannabis often being used to relieve nausea. Rising cannabis potency and accessibility make this issue especially relevant for young people. Dr. Seabrook’s presentation provided:
- An overview of CHS symptoms and diagnostic challenges
- Discussion of its phases and health impacts
- Insights into nutritional concerns and common misdiagnoses
Dr. Seabrook also shared recommendations for prevention, early education, clinical intervention, community support, and policy development, while emphasizing priorities for future research and advocacy.
