Lunch & Learn with Prof. Paolo Boccagni: Beyond the Here-and-Now of Well-Being in Migration

HEAL recently hosted a special Lunch & Learn on October 28, featuring Professor Paolo Boccagni from the University of Trento, Italy.
Professor Boccagni is a Full Professor of Sociology in the Department of Sociology and Social Research where he lectures on social work, intercultural relations, and qualitative research methods. He has led several major projects on migration, refugee, and housing studies, including the ERC Starting Grant “HOMInG – The Home-Migration Nexus” (2016–2022). Over the past two decades, his research has explored migration, integration, transnational family life, and the lived experience of home, with a particular focus on mobile and forcibly displaced people.
In his talk, “Beyond the Here-and-Now: Interrogating the Relational, Spatial and Temporal Scales of Well-Being in Migration” Professor Boccagni offered a socio-anthropological perspective on subjective well-being considering it not only as an individual condition but also as a relational, spatial, and temporal process shaped by the experiences of migration and displacement. Drawing on research with migrant domestic and care workers, transnational home-making, asylum seekers, and the emerging field of death in migration, Professor Boccagni illuminated the complex, multi-scalar nature of well-being within broader social, political, and moral contexts.
