Mobility and Transportation Working Group – Inaugural Meeting Update

Last week, HEAL PhD student Luis Patricio joined fellow members of the Mobility and Transportation Working Group for its inaugural meeting.

The group reflects a high level of diversity across geography, gender, age, ethnicity, and professional experience. Members include representatives from public health, community organizations, business, academia, accessibility advocacy, public transit, and the broader fields of urban planning and mobility.

Luis Patricio’s research focuses on mobility justice, particularly youth urban mobilities. He hopes to contribute to the group’s work by sharing insights from his experience with the HEAL Youth Advisory Council and by bringing a strong equity lens to ongoing discussions.

The meeting provided an overview of London’s Mobility Master Plan (MMP), an opportunity for members to connect, and an initial discussion on how the group will operate moving forward, including priorities, meeting schedules, and communication practices. A key highlight was the announcement of a forthcoming public dashboard that will track progress on urban mobility initiatives across the city.

Participants also reviewed the MMP’s eight Areas of Focus:

  1. Align mobility with London’s future land use
  2. Make transit the preferred option for more trips
  3. Enhance walking and cycling as attractive daily travel options
  4. Manage road capacity strategically
  5. Support London’s role as a regional hub
  6. Put people first in the mobility system
  7. Enable more equitable participation in city life
  8. Prepare for change

While detailed budgets and timelines are still under development, early projections indicate that transit service will need to more than double by 2050 (relative to 2019 levels) to support the plan.

The meeting concluded with a timely discussion on e-scooters. The City’s current by-law is set to expire on May 26, 2026. City staff are preparing a report on the pilot program, expected to go to the Infrastructure & Corporate Services Committee on May 6, followed by City Council on May 12, just two weeks before the by-law’s expiration.
