We’re thrilled to congratulate Dr. Stephanie Coen and the Edge in Sport Physical and Activity Lab on receiving a prestigious British Academy Mid-Career Fellowship 🎉
Dr. Coen, a Faculty Associate and former postdoc here at the HEAL has been awarded this competitive funding to lead groundbreaking research on gendered environments in Paralympic sport. This work, conducted with the UK Sports Institute, will uncover how social and cultural factors shape female Paralympic athletes’ health outcomes and injury rates.
Female Paralympic athletes are twice as likely to sustain major health problems as their male counterparts. Yet most sports injury research ignores both disability and gender. This project fills that critical gap.
Through the More Than Medals initiative, Dr. Coen and her team will identify the specific gendered factors driving these inequities and develop practical solutions. They’ll also create arts-based resources to bring these insights to sports organizations and the public.
This fellowship recognizes how Dr. Coen’s work tackles real, system-wide problems that affect athletes’ lives and careers.
Huge congratulations, Stephanie. We’re excited to see where this leads.
