HEAL is proud to celebrate the achievements of former postdoctoral associate Dr. Dong Liu, who has been awarded the 2026 International Geographical Union (IGU) Early Career Award in Geography. The award recognizes outstanding and innovative contributions by emerging geographers within ten years of completing their terminal degree. Dr. Liu was named among a select group of recipients recognized by the IGU in 2026.
Dr. Liu was a postdoctoral associate with HEAL and the Department of Geography & Environment at Western University from 2021 to 2022, where he contributed to several major initiatives, including research on spatial-temporal activity patterns, active and safe routes to school, and transportation-related health outcomes.
Since leaving Western, Dr. Liu has continued to build an impressive international research program. He is currently an Assistant Professor at The Chinese University of Hong Kong, Shenzhen, where his research focuses on geospatial analytics, urban mobility, environmental health, and socio-spatial inequality.
Congratulations, Dong, on this well-deserved international recognition. He is pictured alongside fellow IGU Transport and Geography Commission Steering Committee members Prof. Chia-Lin Chen (left), Prof. Richard Knowles (Second from the left), and Prof. Andrew Goetz (right).
We are thrilled to see a member of the HEAL community making such significant contributions to geography and urban health research around the world.
We look forward to following your continued success. 🎉
