Dr. Stephanie Coen

Post-Doctoral Associate

Stephanie Coen is a critical health geographer interested in how everyday social and material contexts matter for health and health equity. Her most recent work is concerned with understanding the processes and pathways underlying gender disparities in physical activity; that is, the fact that men and boys are more likely than women and girls to meet the minimum recommended levels of physical activity for health. Her doctoral research focused on the role of everyday exercise places (gyms) in this ‘gendering’ of physical activity. At the HEAL, Stephanie is focusing on the relationships between gender, environment, and physical activity among youth. Stephanie is a qualitative researcher and engages creative and arts-based methods in her work. Cross-cutting these interests, she is committed to “knowledge translation” (KT) to make research more useful and applicable in the real-world so that it can be used as an instrument for positive change.
